What is ear candling?Ear candling, also known as Hopi ear candling, thermal-auricular therapy or coning, is a simple traditional method which has been used by many civilisations all over the world. It was brought to the Western world by the native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona after whom the Hopi candles are named. What are ear candles? The ear candles are not candles as such but hollow tubes measuring about 20 cms. I use Hopi ear candles whhich are made of organically grown cotton flax impregnated with extract of honey, chamomile, sage, St John’s Wort, beta-carotene (Vitamin A) and sprayed with beeswax. What happens during a treatment?Following a consultation, I shall ask you to take your shoes off and lie fully clothed on your side on the couch. I shall light the ‘candle’ at one end and will insert the non-burning end into the outer ear passage. Once the ‘candle’ has burnt down (10 to 12 minutes) I shall remove it carefully and extinguish it in a glass of water. I shall check the edge of the outer ear for possible residue and clean it very gently if necessary. I shall then ask you to roll to the other side to repeat the process in the other ear. Once both ears have been treated, I shall proceed with a soothing massage of the face, ears and neck. What does a treatment feel like? Most people experience a gentle and soothing heat and crackling sound.
